PRESS RELEASE

Badminton –

Maltese Junior Players in Sicily.

Four players from the Junior Academy of Badminton Malta were recently in Sicily in order to take part in a Singles and Doubles tournament against Sicilian players coming from a number of regional clubs.

This event took place in Catania. It was the direct result of the enhanced relationship which developed between Badminton Malta and the Sicilian regional federation following their joint participation in the “Friendship Games” which were organised earlier by the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC).

The Maltese players who travelled to Sicily were Matthew Abela, Nigel Degaetano, Kyle Sciberras and Owen Grech. They were accompanied by Edmond Abela, one of the coaches of the Junior Academy which was set up about two years ago by Badminton Malta with the assistance of the MOC.

The contingent was led by John Attard, Badminton Malta’s General Secretary, under whose initiative this participation came about.

The Maltese players gave their all during the tournament. They obtained several positive results, notable among which are the following:

§         Matthew Abela vs Dario Cavallo  22/20 – 16/21 – 21/18;

§         Nigel Degaetano vs Andrea Di Salvo  21/19 – 25/23;

§         Kyle Sciberras vs Alfredo Rocca  26/24 – 20/22 – 21/14;

§         Owen Grech / Kyle Sciberras vs C. Cavallaro / A. Roccella  21/19 – 22/20.

Grech / Sciberras also placed second in the Doubles tournament, where they lost the final 11/21 15/21 against Alberto Ferretto and Alfio Cavallaro.

Badminton Malta expressed its satisfaction at the successful participation of its junior players in Sicily.

It reaffirmed its commitment to further invest in the development of all its Junior Academy members by continuing to provide them with opportunities of this nature in future.
