PRESS RELEASE
Badminton –
Maltese
Junior Players in Sicily.
Four
players from the Junior Academy of Badminton Malta are this week in Sicily in order to take part in a training camp and a
tournament against Sicilian players under seventeen years of age.
This
event will take place mainly in Catania. It is the result of the enhanced relationship
which developed between Badminton Malta and the Sicilian regional federation following
their joint participation in the “Friendship Games” which were organised earlier
by the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC).
The
Maltese players who are presently in Sicily are Matthew Abela, Nigel Degaetano, Kyle
Sciberras and Owen Grech. There is also Edmond Abela, one of the coaches of the
Junior Academy which was set up about two years ago by Badminton Malta with the assistance of the MOC.
The
contingent is led by John Attard, Badminton Malta’s General Secretary, under whose initiative this
participation came about.
The
Maltese players have been preparing themselves well for this event. For three
of them – namely for Nigel Degaetano and Kyle Sciberras as well as for Owen
Grech – this will be the second international experience beyond our shores
following their successful participation in an international tournament held in
Nicosia, Cyprus, last January.
While
wishing its players a successful outcome, Badminton Malta reaffirmed its commitment to invest in the
development of its upcoming junior players by continuing to provide them with
opportunities of this nature in order to improve their standard of technical
and tactical play against foreign opponents of the same age bracket.
